살아있는 세포내에서 생명현상을 유지하고 있는 세포소기관들의 구조적인 특징과 기본적인 생물화학적인 현상을 이해시키고 세포막과 세포질 및 핵을 비롯한 각종 세포소기관간의 연관관계를 소개함으로써, 세포를 이용한 생물공학적 첨단기술의 개발과 그 산업화에 필요한 기초지식을 습득하게 한다.
